November 2011 - Camp Durant Advancement Campout

On November 18-20 the troop visited camp Durant. We camped at Ash. The objective of this campout was to completed several advancement requirements for 2nd class and 1st class. There were 11 scouts attending this campout. The advancements focused on axe and saw safety, orienteering, knots, compass use and lashings. We arrived at camp Durant at about 7:30pm and set up camp in the dark. The weather was to forcasted to be clear and cold. Boy was it ever cold. Friday night / Saturday morning the low temperature was 28 degrees. We got up Saturday morning at 6:30 am. We saw the sunrise come over the lake. It was awesome. Jack got the campfire started very early and got everyone warmed up. Ian started breakfast (pancakes and sausage) with Drew and Reynaldo cooking. It was good. After breakfast the troop split into 3 groups and practiced lashings. The 3 groups were led by Derek, Jack and Reynaldo. Everyone completed 3 different lashings. Alejando, Chandler, Drew and Zack worked hard cutting wood for the Saturday night campfire with the Axe and Saw. Lunch was soup and sandwiches. The soup warmed everyone up. The leaders showed us how to estimated distances by counting paces or strides based on our normal walking steps. We then had a class on how to orient a map and compass, how to take a bearing and how to use the compass bezel. The troop was split into 5 groups and completed a orienteering course laid out by the adult leaders. The course was 1.2 miles long and had 8 different marks. It took about an hour and a half to complete the course. Dinner was served. We had Jambalaya (Mr. Lombardo would have liked it, it did not have bacon in it). Paul did a excellent job cleaning the troop gear. After dinner the troop went to the activity field and attempted to find the North Star. Cloud cover made this difficult so we went back to the campsite and had a nice campfire. Everyone was tired andwent to bed early. Sunday morning was our normal oatmeal breakfast, clean up, tear down camp and police call. We arrived back at the Church, around 11:30 Sunday. This campout had many younger scouts on it. They did a great job. By Derek E.

October 2011 - Hiking in Uwharrie
Click to view October 2011 Hiking trip On the weekend of October 8th and 9th, the Scout Troop 787, set out to embark on a hiking trip in the Uwharrie Forest. The Scouts had a great time and they hiked over 5 miles give or take a few. A few of the campers had never camped before as a Boy Scout, and really enjoyed the experience that they had. At around noon on Saturday, the troop ventured out on their way to Uwharrie Forest, when they got there, they got their packs fitted and ready to go. The troop set out at around one o’clock to reach their camp site. They got off at a slow pace and reached the camp site at three o’clock. The younger scouts were having “technical difficulties” with their packs. Later that day, the troop set out to start a race, sadly they could not find the starting point so they called it quits, but eventually they found the starting point and just kept hiking. At around eight o’clock in the evening, the troop had a nice warm beef stew by the campfire that was wonderfully prepared by Connor H.. The troop ate their dinner and sat by the campfire until it was ten o’clock were they sang Taps and then most of them went to sleep. Sunday morning, started off slow, as everybody rushed to get their hiking packs set up and their tents down. For breakfast the troop had a bagel optionally with cream cheese, and a Special K Breakfast Bar. After the troop ate they finished packing, had a police call, had a final inspection of the campsite, and then went on their way to the parking lot. The trip to the parking lot was very quick, when we got back to Saint Patrick’s, the troop unpack the trailer and put it back in the shed. The young campers, especially, put forth a lot of effort into this campout, and the troop hopes that they will have many more campouts like this one. By Luke M.

March 2011 - Geocachin' Trip
We had a good time. We split into two shifts with two groups each. This enabled us to have all scouts to get at least four geocaches in. The most I heard that someone got was 7. There were a lot of micros in the downtown area. I sent my first travelbug out. Everyone had a great time and I think everyone avoided the poison ivy in our campsite! That rain fly was a pain to get up!   The second picture is my travelbug we dropped off during the trip.  Posted by Ethan C.

February 2011 - Camp Durant Trip
I was not able to participate on this trip, though I do have feedback from a well known source (Jake C.). The scouts worked on advancements and their fire safety merit badge. The scouts also had a great game of capture the flag with another nearby troop. One of our scouts acted as if he was on their team and eventually captured their flag...Posted by Ethan C.

January 2011 - Ski trip at Boone

We had a good time at the ski trip. We had 18 people including adults, visiting Beech mountain and we all got some good skiing in. Everyone learned how to ski pretty fast and didn't have a problem. We did not receive very many pictures due to the photographer getting cold hands whenever he felt like taking a picture, he knows who he is...Posted by Ethan C.
